What is Yoga

Yoga is a series of postures or poses that are done fluidly and steadily while controlling breathing. Yoga is essentially an low-impact exercise that is invigorating yet relaxing, as it also encompasses some meditation. Yoga is about strength and flexibility, not just about stretching, however, stretching and ‘reaching’ is definitely a part of yoga. Anyone can do yoga, from babies to seniors and of all lifestyles. Practicing yoga is different for each person and the best thing about it is that you can tailor it to suit your needs and activity level.

There are different styles of yoga, all of which utilize essentially the same poses but with different emphasis. The styles of yoga which are most commonly known are Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Power Yoga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Bikram (or Hot Yoga), Anusara, Jivamukti, Forrest, Integral, and Sivananda.

Regardless of the style of yoga you choose to undertake, there is an underlying notion to all of yoga - balance, relaxation, flexibility and strength while including spiritual well being and meditation. Each style of yoga focuses more on one aspect, whether that be physical, breathing or spiritual. Each style of yoga is good for your health, it’s more a matter of personal taste as to which style is right for you.

Your yoga practice is exactly that-yours. It’s personalized to you, only you can do it and you will get something different out of yoga than other people will. Yoga grows with you as you get to understand it better and have each position mean more to you each time you try it.
